Monthly Training Goals
Winter Semester Training (January-February)
Theme: Clarity and Consistency
"The only thing constant is change". We experience this in our practice every time we encounter a new uke; a new way of looking at a form. From one exam to the next, one day to the next we seek to refine ourselves in our training. We polish and chip away at the hard edges, the inconsistencies.
Upcoming classes will reflect this smoothing and refining.
On the mats this will be working to refine the flow within the form/technique. A consistency of focus from the time you walk thru the door to bowing out. We bow at the door to remind ourselves, “Now, training begins.” There is no separation from bowing, to training, to changing partners, to watching sensei, to cleaning the dojo. All is training, the mind, the intent, the direction of growth.
Off the mat you might want to reflect how to be consistent in your own personal life. Ask yourself, “Where in my life am I inconsistent?” “How clear and open am I within my relationships/communications with others?”
Practically, on the mats, training will focus on DAN level forms and performance expectations. Kyu and non-ranked students will be expected to refine and polish their ukemi. Remembering that ukemi is in every form, every act. It is not simply, “my turn”. It is always “your turn”. Come to the mats with the openness and intent that, “I am here to receive. How can I best express this in each moment?”
